When I started working on websites, I was heavily focused on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to get traffic to our business websites.  Then I had my eyes opened to the idea of having a marketing campaign online (aka Google’s AdWords, PPC, etc) and how that mixed with fundamental SEO led to great traffic (all at a cost obviously).

When asked why I don’t focus on SEO like my good friends over at SEO-Alien, I like to explain that to be fully keyed into great Site SEO, you need to essentially pay attention to all the changes and fluctuations that occur.  One simply change by Google can knock your SEO rating down by volumes, thus forcing you to possibly start the work all over again.

SEO is sort of like a long drawn out War.  Each side adjusting and reacting to the changes that the other side is doing.  Push and Pull.  Give and Take.  To be at the top of your game, you need to stay very focused on SEO 24/7.  To be blunt, while I love good competition, I have way too many other things on my plate to stay so focused.   Instead, I like to team up with those who LOVE SEO and let them keep on top of the changes.

So instead of doing all the high level tweaking to my site, I generally focus on the simple things.  I make sure first and foremost that I always have good content on my sites.  Essentially I try to have content that I myself would want to read, thus assuming that I am not alone.  Secondly, I attempt to load the site and the articles with appropriate keywords and tags to help attract readers to my content.  Finally, I make my sites easy to navigate.  Always trying to keep all of my pages within one to three mouse clicks away from my home page.  These always seem to help and also help with my AdWord campaigns and cost per clicks.

As far as SEO goes, at the end of last month Google made a pretty major change to it’s SEO “Long-Tail” Algorithm that has upset a LOT of the big dog websites out there, some claiming to see as much as 60-90% drop off of their site traffic.  So Google’s Matt Cutt made this nice video to explain just what happened and what it’s implications are.
